Petition for Equal Treatment of Religious Symbols in Schools

WICHITA NORTH HIGH SCHOOL PETITION for EQUAL TREATMENT OF NON- INDIAN RELIGIOUS SYMBOLS in WICHITA, KANSAS, PUBLIC SCHOOLS, USD 259

Preferential treatment and endorsement of Native American religious symbols is being done by permanently displaying them at Wichita North High School.

All persons of faith who live their religious beliefs are speaking out in favor of their right to RELIGIOUS EQUAL ACCESS in the Wichita Public Schools

Students and families of other religious communities have been discouraged from or forbidden to:

Display their religion's symbols permanently in the schools in a manner equal to the Native American religious symbols.
Teach students about the meaning and symbolism of their religion in a manner equal to the Native American religion.
Place their religious symbols in a place of permanent honor and defend their permanent use with the endorsement and protection of the board of education.

Religious symbols sacred to Native Americans are permanently displayed at Wichita North High School. Most obvious is the image of the eagle feather on logos, art work, sculpture and administrative documentation.

BE IT NOTED- Federal law (16 USC 668a) allows Indian religious use of Eagle Feathers and Other Animal Parts under a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service permit system. THEY ARE RELIGIOUS SYMBOLS. Permit can be obtained at:

ATTENTION USD 259 BOARD of EDUCATION

We the people do now request the equal presentation of religious images in the public schools and request that a schedule be immediately established by Wichita Board of Education for the permanent display of ours and other religious symbols in a manner equal to those of Native Americans currently in use by the Wichita Public Schools and Wichita North High School.

We do now ask the Wichita Board of Education for equal treatment of religious symbols from the public schools including the endorsement, pride and honoring that Native American Religious Symbols enjoy.
