AMERICAN COMMENTS MAGAZINE REPORT, July 14, 1997, "INDIAN BECOMES FIRST
TO BE MVP IN OWN PARK" Once again racism comes to the forefront in the
USA. Call it a bad habit, (que malo hombre!) ignorance, insensitivity
or just plain aggressive bigotry the Wichita Eagle flies its beak
into the racial muck. It was the Wichita Eagle sports staff who wrote
the headline that tagged AP writer, Ben Walkers, story on professional
baseballs, 1997 ALL STAR GAME. This game was played in the well
known Cleveland Ohio's recognized bigot breeding ground, Jacob's Field. In another field 107 years
ago 300 dead Indian children,
women and men found their religious beliefs were not seen not for
the truth of their meaning. They were killed for their religion at Wounded
Knee, SD. How is 19th
century misinformation and fabrication about Indian people any different
form the falsehoods by which Native Americans are portrayed today as
mascots? What is the meaning and significance
of the eagle feather? QUESTIONS FOR BASEBALL'S SANDY ALOMAR: Q: Is Sandy Alomar of Cleveland baseball & fame a Native American? A: Mr. Sandy Alomar IS NOT a Native American, he claims another line of heritage. Frankly, this magazine is looking to see an apology to the Indian people from him for his racist behavior. Q: Is Sandy Alomar so inconsiderate of HIS family that he would place them on the mascot block in the USA? Q: Will Mr. Sandy Alomar offer up his family, his relatives and his ancestral heritage as mascots? Q: If not, then why is Sandy Alomar treating another race in such a racist manner? Q: Does the MVP mean so much to you, Sandy Alomar, that you become a racist? THE STAFF OF AMERICAN COMMENTS Contact UsAWAIT YOUR REPLY , SANDY ALOMAR DOES THE WICHITA EAGLE PLAY THE RACIST GAME?
Pardon the racial stereotypes but since thats where the money is in the professional sports game, I cant help but ask, "Are all Wichita Eagle sports writers white racists, or do they just act like them to sell to the fans? " THE MEAT OF THE MATTER: Last time AMERICAN COMMENTS magazine staff looked at Mr. Sandy Alomars stats he was calling himself a PUERTO RICAN not an INDIAN. But what can we say that will help educate the Eagle sports staff that has spent its entire history in a city that has the highest population of Indians between Oklahoma City, OK and Rapid City, SD? HOW ABOUT... "Ug?" If I was in the Eagle's shoes I would say, " Hey, it's just a game, no harm meant" But, this writer is not in their shoes so I say, "Looks like plenty of evidence that once again a newspaper supports and promotes a racist team." Whats the excuse? Is it popular to be a sports racist? What is the game we are talking about here anyway? Should the DISPLAY ADVERTISING take the top half of the pages on the Wichita Eagle sports section and give an honest presentation of sports writing?
Hey, I say, what the heck racial stereotypes are fun, no Senor? Forget about the eagle feathers and Christian crosses and religious intolerance. No harm done with racial stereotypes as long as they are only for FUN AND PROFIT. RATIONALIZATIONS & EXCUSES or EDUCATED REPORTING? If we remember the Wichita Eagle is WE WANT TO PLAY THE STEREOTYPING GAME TOO Does the Eagle sports staff have to tape their fingers together to keep from accidentally typing "Beaners" when writing about those surprisingly lively Hispanics that make professional baseball so much fun these days? It wouldn't be hard to claim "Beaners" as an honor for every Latino though, especially if you look at how well "those kind of people" have pulled themselves up out of the gutters and barrios. I guess not all our cousins "South of the Border" like to sleep instead of work. We will give the Wichta Eagle sports staff *TWO STARS* for sleeping
on the job along with the benefit of the doubt at least until we see
another beak dive into the racial and religious muck. Thanks
for another sports headline at the expense of Native Americans Wichita
Eagle. Playing with racial stereotypes can be fun as well as educational!
