American Mascots and their nieces and nephews alive in schools today
say, "Please do not harass me when I say
my uncle is not your mascot."

don't you make some of these
Jewish children your mascots for awhile? You can wear little skull
caps and sit in the wooden fooball bleachers just like they are in
the photograph.

was drawn to a group of, "eight or ten Indian boys dressed in
the gray school uniforms of the period. The fun they were having as
they played...carried the mind for a fleeting moment back to the days
of boyhood." After the fighting stopped, Allen walked around
"viewing the sad spectacle" and found "the prostrate
bodies of all those fine little Indian boys, cold in death."

those boys as students of the Pine Ridge Agency boarding school who
were returning from a vacation with relatives at the Cheyenne River
Agency,
it was just 4 days after Christmas day, 1890.
