Re: COMPLAINT FILED WITH DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE AGAINST LITTLE RIVER PUBLIC SCHOOLS, LITTLE RIVER KANSAS
A formal complaint against Little River School District #444 has been submitted to the United States Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division.
The complaint filed by Joni Tucker-Nisbeth, of the American Indian Movement, Kansas Support Group and Matthew Richter of McPherson, calls for the Department of Justice (DOJ) to immediately terminate Little River's race-based redskins mascot identity. The 80 page document proves the school district maintains a racially hostile environment that adversely affects the surrounding communities.
The complaint asks that the Justice Department eliminate the public school district's permanent use of the eagle feather, which is a Native American religious symbol. Permanent use of the eagle feather, or any religious symbol, by Little River public schools is a violation of federal law and Little River School District policy.
Little River school administrators have repeatedly turned away efforts made by Native American supporters to discuss the issue including mediation with DOJ representatives. Primary concerns revolve around two race hate crimes committed at Little River Sr. High against a Native American activist and their direct connection to Little River's racial redskins identity. Congressman Jerry Moran has called the situation at Little River High School, "inexcusable" asking the FBI to investigate.
By ignoring these concerns, which have been repeatedly been brought to their attention, and by rejecting good faith attempts to mediate positive changes, school officials clearly show their intent to maintain a racially hostile environment. They are responsible for the race hate crimes committed at their school and for the hurt it has caused in the community.
